Andrea L. Scherzer
MA, MSc., BA(Hons) UKCP Registered MBACP
Andrea is a UKCP registered psychotherapist, supervisor, trainer and media advisor with 10 years specialist experience helping young people and adults who struggle with eating disorders, self-harm and other self-destructive problems. In addition to her private psychotherapy practice in North West London - where she sees clients with a wide range of presenting concerns - she has worked extensively in the NHS, the private health sector and the State and private education systems.
She is originally from New York but has lived in the UK since 1990. After completing a BA(Hons) in sociology, moving to the UK and gaining an Msc. in Sociology (Education) at Southbank University in 1992, she spent several years supporting children and young people, teachers and parents as an education social worker in London.
She received an MA in Integrative Psychotherapy and Counselling from Regent’s College School of Psychotherapy and Counselling Psychology in 1999 and has been registered with the UKCP as an Integrative Psychotherapist since 2000.
In addition to her clinical work, she is a lecturer and tutor on the Foundation in Psychotherapy and MA Counselling courses at Regent’s and a relationship advisor for thesite.org which is part of Youthnet, an online advice and resource service for people aged 16-30. She was an agony aunt at Bliss magazine from 1997-2007 and regularly acts as a media advisor on issues relating to psychotherapy and young people’s mental health. She recently appeared on GMTV and Channel 5 to discuss self-harm, and on several occasions has been invited to Radio One’s Sunday Surgery as a professional expert on eating disorders, self-esteem and self-destructive behaviour.
She offers supervision and training to education and mental health care professionals and is one of the authors of Violent Adolescents: Understanding the Destructive Impulse (Karnac, 2005).
